Health and Safety Policy
1. Statement of intent
GMB Security Ltd is committed to protecting the health, safety and welfare of our guards, our clients, their staff and visitors, and members of the public. We will meet our duties under the Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974, the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999 and all other relevant laws.
We will provide safe ways of working, the right information, training and equipment, and enough supervision for every guard to work safely. We will consult our staff on health and safety and keep improving how we work.
2. Responsibilities
- Managing Directors have overall responsibility for health and safety and for making sure this policy is followed and reviewed.
- Managers and supervisors make sure risk assessments are done, guards are briefed, and any problems are dealt with quickly.
- Every guard must take reasonable care of their own safety and that of others, follow site rules and safe working instructions, wear the PPE provided, and report hazards, near misses and incidents straight away.
3. Risk assessment
Before any assignment starts, we assess the risks on site, including the layout, hazards, lighting, access, lone working, violence and aggression, and the client's own site rules. We record the controls needed and share them with the guards on that site. Risk assessments are reviewed when anything changes, after an incident, and at least once a year.
4. Site induction and briefing
Every guard receives a site briefing before their first shift. This covers the assignment instructions, emergency procedures, fire exits and assembly points, first aid arrangements, contact numbers and any site-specific hazards. On construction sites, guards take part in the principal contractor's site induction and follow its rules.
5. Personal protective equipment (PPE)
We provide suitable PPE for each role at no cost to the guard, such as high-visibility clothing, safety footwear, hard hats on construction sites, and weatherproof clothing. Guards must wear it where required and report any damaged or missing PPE.
6. Lone working
Guards working alone have regular welfare check-ins at agreed times. If a check-in is missed, our escalation procedure is followed straight away. Guards carry a charged mobile phone and know who to contact in an emergency.
7. Violence, aggression and conflict
Our guards are trained in conflict management. They are instructed never to put themselves at unnecessary risk, to withdraw where it is safe to do so, and to call the police when needed. Any incident of violence or aggression must be reported and is reviewed.
8. Training and competence
Every guard holds a valid SIA licence for their role and is vetted to BS7858. We provide training on this policy, site procedures, conflict management and any equipment used. Training records are kept up to date.
9. Accidents, incidents and near misses
All accidents, incidents and near misses must be reported to a manager as soon as possible and recorded. We investigate to find the cause and stop it happening again. Incidents that must be reported under RIDDOR are reported to the Health and Safety Executive.
10. Welfare and wellbeing
We make sure guards have access to welfare facilities on site, take proper breaks and do not work excessive hours, in line with the Working Time Regulations 1998. We encourage guards to raise any health, stress or wellbeing concerns with us.
11. Working with clients
We cooperate with each client's own health and safety arrangements and share information about risks so that everyone on site stays safe.
12. Review
This policy is reviewed at least once a year by the Managing Directors, and sooner if the business, our services or the law change.
